Swing Bed Program

The term Swing Bed refers to a Medicare program that allows the use of rural hospitals beds to provide skilled rehabilitation, or long term extended care services. The goal during your stay is to promote active participation between you, your family and the staff in order to recover to the highest level of physical function and quality of life. During your stay, your care team will plan both your stay and discharge needs. Your care team includes: you, your family, your medical provider, nursing staff, therapists, dietary staff and our social worker. Our Dietary staff will consult with you daily on available menu options and laundry services are also available.

The Swing Bed program offers a full range of services that include rehabilitation after a stroke, hip or knee replacement surgery, IV Medication, nutrition therapy, strength training, wound therapy, and regulation of medications.

The Swing Bed program is located on the regular patient floor at Howard County Medical Center. Patients that have had surgery at a different facility are still welcome to receive rehabilitation at Howard County so that they may be closer to friends and family.

If you have surgery at another facility, but would like to complete your rehabilitation at HCMC, please contact either Kelli Wood or Kathy Bowman, and they will help you coordinate the process.
